You’ll probably agree with this 100%. OTT is the new theater, boss. Every week, a new film comes out, and the audience starts watching it at home more than in theaters. Take “Dude” for example. The film may have done a good 100 crore rupees in theaters, but upon its release on OTT, the film, which originated in the South, is driving North audiences crazy. Even the Telugu film “Kada,” which released alongside it, didn’t see it in theaters, but it’s already breaking records on OTT.

It’s a double-meaning subject, but at least it’s getting its message across. And this listis furthered by a Tamil film released on OTT this Friday that, in my opinion, will easily win the Best Film of the Year award of 2025. I’m talking about Bison, which has been released on Netflix. And the good news is, this film isn’t alone; it’s also been dubbed in Hindi.

So, if you haven’t heard of it, remember this name: Mari Silveraj. His film was once the top-rated film in India, and his second film was Karnan. Without a doubt, if he had taken it to the Oscars, this director wouldn’t have come empty-handed.

He would have snatched a couple of awards from the British. Now comes his hat-trick film, Bison, which is full of intense crime and eye-popping violence, but with an ending that will make even the most alpha male cry.

While the subject matter is related to Kabaddi, it’s not a sports film. Rather, it’s a mentally disturbing film that will make you wonder, does such a thing even exist in the world we live in? The story is set in a village where every person, from childhood to old age, has only one dream:

To play Kabaddi for the village and break the enemy’s bones. But in this very village lives a man whose one rule no one can break: that his son can never play Kabaddi.

Whoever tried, lost his life. But the boy is also the blood of this father. He will only play Kabaddi, and once his teacher sees him playing, he dreams of taking him to the Indian team. Now, let me tell you another aspect of this story. Two villages from which two of the most powerful men emerge. Their photos are permanently on the most wanted list at the police station. There’s a scene in the film specifically about goat sacrifice.

It’s a very haunting scene. You’ll never forget it, and the reason behind it is this rivalry. Taking someone’s life is a cakewalk for these two. But they have to take each other’s life, and because of this, the rivalry has expanded from two individuals to two entire villages. On one hand, there’s tension between father and son over Kabaddi. On the other, the old rivalry has reached the point of guns. And that’s when Bison enters the story. You might only see the animal, but the film’s distinctive identity is a powerful story that reveals God in a bison. Even though the film is three and a quarter hours long, it moves at a breakneck pace.

So many things happen simultaneously in one story that you barely get a chance to breathe. It’s so well-illustrated that discrimination doesn’t just exist in humans, but also in sports. Caste discrimination can, without reason, turn two intelligent people into mortal enemies. You can view this film simply as a suspenseful thriller and sports drama, or you can connect with the characters and the film’s true message. It’s worth four out of five stars. It’s a truly realistic portrayal of the 90s, a compelling interest in Kabaddi despite not knowing it, a compelling crime drama, and a human-animal transformation, plus top-notch acting. Vikram Jr. has taken after his father. This could be a negative.

The ending is impactful, but could have been less predictable. See the best movie of the year yourself, take it to your family. Take care. Go bye-bye.
