A brave soldier in the Indian Army, famous for his name, because everyone wants to know. What could have happened that made a parent name their son Shaitan? To answer this very question, Bollywood has adapted real history into a war film, one that has raised hopes like “Border.” This is the story of 120 brave men who single-handedly fought against 3,000 Chinese enemies, atop 17,000 feet of mountain, in temperatures below -24°C. Do you know how long? It took Farhan Akhtar four years to choose the film that would mark his comeback in cinema, but he couldn’t have imagined he would be welcomed to such empty theaters.
The film’s subject is heroic, yet the public hype for it is zero. So, will the subject matter carry it through, or is something wrong that’s kept the film under wraps? So, boss, the story begins with the voice of a radio operator who regains consciousness in the hospital, but what he reveals shocks the entire army.
The story of a 100-hour war witnessed with my own eyes, a battle that neither India nor China refused to acknowledge for three months.
Major Shaitan Singh, who would not think twice about taking or giving life. A gun aimed at himself, but the enemy’s blood was the pretext. This passion for his country turns into madness when he is joined by 120 brave men like him, ready to fight even when faced with 3,000 Chinese soldiers armed with weapons.
If I were to tell you, these 100 men so terrified China that it not only retreated but refused to accept the bodies of 2,000 soldiers as its own. Because those 3,000 Chinese soldiers that night saw that the people they were fighting in the mountains were not human. Bullets couldn’t kill them, and knives wouldn’t cut them. It was as if the devil himself had come upon them. How could it be possible to kill someone who had already considered himself dead?

Now you understand why Shaitan Singh’s name alone is enough. It’s a powerful yet simple story, presented with impressive VFX, color grading, and realistic locations. It takes you straight from the theater to the mountains. But everyone had one doubt before watching the film, and that doubt was dispelled after. Was it a hasty decision to cast Farhan Akhtar in this role? Farhan isn’t the best choice, but he’s done a great job of revealing the devil within him.
The action scenes, in particular, are mind-boggling. The first half of the film is spent showing the families, emotions, and backstories of the soldiers, connecting you personally with them. There’s also a captivating song that takes you inside the minds of the soldiers. Then, the second half is entirely about war. There, the soldiers’ bodies demonstrate their strength. There’s fighting, bloodshed, sacrifice, and soldiers who face death head-on. But you know, a film like this will be incredibly emotional.
You might even cry a little. It’ll bring goosebumps. You’ll bow your head before the film. But somewhere in your heart, you’ll wonder, “Do those 120 Bahadurs deserve better cinema?” Films like “Border” and “Gadar” were made to evoke emotions in people. They were entertaining, and everyone could enjoy them. Whereas “120 Bahadur” is made in a completely different style. Instead of fun and frolic, it’s straight-to-the-point action, which some people won’t find appealing. But yes, you won’t be able to forget these two hours.
Starting with Farhan Akhtar, you’ll be immersed in the story of the other soldiers. You’ll come away from the theater having witnessed real life, not acting. 3 out of 5 stars for the story, acting, climax, and absolutely realistic scenes.
Negative: A little more detailing would have made the army side better, and the Chinese side lacked a strong villain character. This film is unique. It’s not like Bollywood, but it’s not a masterpiece like Border. The rest is your decision. Take care. Bye-bye.
